About the studio

The willow is known for its strong but pliant wood. Its roots are remarkable for their toughness, size, and tenacity of life. They can readily grow from aerial parts of the tree. Almost all willows take root readily from cuttings and an entire tree may grow from a single broken branch. These qualities of the willow align well with many of our movement goals at Willow Wellness Studio.

Willow Wellness Studio

Willow Wellness Studio is a fully equipped studio offering Gyrotonic, Gyrokinesis, and Pilates instruction. A visit to Willow is a vacation from the constant demands of daily life. We offer private, semi-private, and small group training with an emphasis on personalized attention to help you get the most out of your workout. We believe that education is a key component in a healthy lifestyle. We strive not only to teach exercises but also to teach our clients about their bodies through the exercises so that they will be empowered in all of their health and wellness endeavors. Special emphasis is placed on how to use the principles of the movement in daily living. Our clients find that they take this awareness out of the studio with them, allowing them to make more informed decisions about their bodies and lives. We work with people of all ages and fitness levels.

Each person has a unique set of needs and desires and we will work with you to design a workout plan that fits your goals and lifestyle. Our instructors have received the highest level of training and constantly pursue continuing education in order to address as many different needs as possible.

We are located on the third floor at 202 East Washington. Elevators offer easy access to the space. Natural light pours in through the windows creating a serene space for re-energizing your body and relaxing your mind. Come early and enjoy a complementary cup of tea or a light snack. Our clients are also welcome to borrow books and DVDs from our wellness library. Willow was created with the goal of providing a superior client experience -- come let us take care of you!

Heather has drawn on all three of these traits to create Willow Wellness Studio. As an example of someone who is living a dream, she hopes to inspire others to pursue their dreams as well.

Heather first studied Pilates in Colorado when her ballet teacher promised that it would make her a better dancer. She went on to receive a B.A. in Dance Studies from Grinnell College. She has studied various Pilates methods since 1992 and completed her certification in STOTT Pilates in 2006 at Equilibrium in Bloomfield Hills, MI. She discovered the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis methodologies in 2004 and has been continuing to fall in love with them ever since. After completing her certification in both methods, she has gone on to study prenatal and postpartum applications of Gyrotonic and Pilates as well as therapeutic applications of the movements. She specializes in injury rehabilitation including shoulder, neck, low back, hip, scolioses and SI pain. She continually strives to deepen her knowledge of the human body, traveling around the country to advance her studies. Her own experiences with past pain and injuries gives her a deeper understanding and compassion for others who are currently struggling with pain or injuries. Through her teaching she seeks to help people of all ability levels lead happier, healthier lives.

When she isn’t teaching, cleaning the studio, or responding to email and phone messages, Heather loves to spend time with her three dogs and her husband. She participates in dog rescue through Colonel Potter Cairn Rescue Network and serves on the board of directors for Happendance, a Lansing-based dance company and school. She also periodically participates in various dance projects in the Ann Arbor area.

She began her instructor training to learn more about how to help others. She is now just finishing her Level 2 Full Certification with Stott Pilates. Her interest in sport has also led her to specialize in the use of Pilates for golf and she enjoys helping golfers to bring a new competetive edge to their game.

Alexi is a lecturer at Eastern Michigan University teaching Pilates and continues to teach at a variety of studios including Liberty Athletic Club, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor YMCA and Ann Arbor Rec & Ed. At Willow she enjoys the opportunity to work closely and effectively with individuals using a wide array of equipment to keep workouts fun and varied.

Movement Systems

Heather demonstrates an exercise on the Gyrotonic Pulley Tower.

Gyrotonic Methodology

The Gyrotonic method is comprised of fluid, three-dimensional movements. At Willow Wellness Studio we offer Gyrotonic private lessons and duets.

Juliu Horvath created Gyrotonic equipment and exercises after many years of intense study and self-exploration. This unique system offers the same benefits also derived from yoga, dance, gymnastics, swimming and tai chi, but is not derived from these exercise modalities.

Gyrotonic methodology allows users to stretch and strengthen muscles, while simultaneously stimulating and strengthening connective tissues in and around the joints of the body. These exercises are synchronized with corresponding breathing patterns, thus enhancing aerobic and cardiovascular stimulation and promoting neuro-muscular rejuvenation.

Gyrotonic exercises offer complete freedom of movement. Exercises are performed on the Gyrotonic Pulley Tower, and the system is fully adjustable to meet the needs of many people with varying body types and levels of strength. The even and constant resistance in the handle unit and pulley tower completely eliminates the jarring that takes place at the beginning and end of exercises performed on conventional exercise equipment, when many injuries occur. The circular, spiraling and undulating movements that characterize the Gyrotonic methodology help to increase the functional capacity of the spine, contributing to a spherical and three-dimensional awareness, resulting in improved balance.

A Gyrokinesis exercise.

Gyrokinesis Methodology

The Gyrokinesis method is based on the same principles as Gyrotonic movement, but it is performed sitting on stools, on the mat, and standing. Since no large equipment is needed, Gyrokinesis exercises are often practiced in group classes. This is also an excellent system to practice at home or while traveling since the space and equipment requirements are limited.

A few benefits of the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis exercises include:

  • Greater ease of movement;
  • Stronger muscles which are also more flexible;
  • An increased sense of connection through the body and body awareness;
  • More mobility of the spine;
  • Improved balance.

More information about the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis methodologies is available at www.gyrotonic.com.

Pilates

Pilates is a physical fitness system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. Pilates called his method Contrology, because he believed his method uses the mind to control the muscles. The program focuses on the core postural muscles which help keep the body balanced and which are essential to providing support for the spine. In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and alignment of the spine, and aim to strengthen the deep torso muscles.

Instructors at Willow Studio are trained in the STOTT method of Pilates. STOTT PILATES is a contemporary approach to the original exercise method pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates. Co-founders Moira and Lindsay G. Merrithew, along with a team of physical therapists, sports medicine and fitness professionals, have spent more than a decade refining the STOTT PILATES method of exercise. This resulted in the inclusion of modern principles of exercise science and spinal rehabilitation, making it one of the safest and most effective methods available. This clear and detailed approach forms the basis for STOTT PILATES training and certification programs.

A few benefits of the Pilates system include:

  • Longer, leaner muscles (less bulk, more freedom of movement);
  • Improved posture;
  • Increased core strength, stability and peripheral mobility;
  • Heightened body awareness;
  • No-impact, easy on the joints.

Injuries and Prenatal/postpartum

The Pilates and Gyrotonic exercises can be modified to suit everyone from rehab patients to elite athletes and we love working with people on all parts of the spectrum. Instructors at Willow Wellness Studio have special training to use these movement systems therapeutically for rehabilitating injuries. These exercise systems are also safe and appropriate (with your doctor’s approval, of course) for pregnancy as well as postpartum rehabilitation. Our instructors have taken special training and are certified to design prenatal and postpartum workouts.

What is the difference between Pilates and the Gyrotonic method?

Pilates focuses on alignment control while Gyrotonic exercises work on releasing tension around the joints, re-patterning basic movements to be more efficient, and using a more full range of motion. Pilates is more two dimensional and linear while Gyrotonic exercises are more three dimensional, using circling and spiraling movements. In Pilates we work from the ‘core’ meaning, primarily, use of the abdominal muscles. In Gyrotonic movements we use the muscles of the pelvis, the abdominals, and the intrinsic muscles of the spine as our ‘core’. Pilates tends to work different parts of the body more individually while Gyrotonic philosophy approaches the body as a more integrated whole. Activities involving broad movements and rotation over a larger range would especially benefit from Gyrotonic exercises. Here is a real life example: Pilates would strengthen the PURE rotation of the golf swing and Gyrotonic exercises would focus on the larger range of motion necessary for a successful and powerful golf swing.

Pilates probably looks a little bit more like movement that you have encountered elsewhere -- at the gym or in physical therapy. Gyrotonic movements look more like dance and may seem more intimidating at first. If you are primarily interested in toning or strengthening specific muscles then you may want to try Pilates first. If you are interested in increasing your overall balance, coordination, or range of movement then try Gyrotonic methodology. We generally find that people gravitate more towards one system. We want you to enjoy your workout and are happy to let you give both systems a try.

Alexi practices her balance with a Pilates move.

What should I expect at my first lesson?

Come prepared with comfortable clothing which allows for freedom of movement. We don’t require form-fitting clothes, but you may find that really baggy clothes will get in your way. At your first lesson your instructor will take time to learn about your body and workout goals. You will be asked to fill out our waiver form and questionnai which you are also welcome to download and fill out in advance. You will then begin to learn the principles of the movement. Many people find that they have ‘a lot of things to think about’ at first, but don’t be overwhelmed! After a few lessons, the movement will become more familiar and for many people it may take on an almost meditative quality with more practice.

How often should I come for lessons?

The answer to this question varies depending on your goals, schedule, and finances. We will work with you at your initial session to create a plan that works for all of these considerations.

We keep our group classes small so you get more individual attention.

Group Class Schedule June 29-August 30, 2009

We ask that all students take a 45-minute initial session (with either instructor) before joining a group class. This session allows us to help you design a personal workout plan and allows you to gain a basic familiarity with the movement in a one-on-one setting.

Class space is limited. Please contact the instructor of the class that you are interested in taking for space availability or other questions.
